MilkWorks Celebrates Ten Years!
MilkWorks opened our doors ten years ago in February, 2001, shortly after the US Surgeon General released the Breastfeeding Blueprint for Action. We are pleased to announce that we are turning ten just as the US Surgeon General is releasing an updated Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding. We are pleased to report that images from MilkWorks are included in the report.
Our work is cut out for us as we continue to provide a support system that helps mothers breastfeed their babies. While 75% of US mothers start breastfeeding, only 13% of babies are exclusively breastfed at six months of age.
In order to keep MilkWorks a resource in our community, a group of volunteers launched a Best Beginnings fund drive in September 2010. Their goal is to make sure that no mother is left without the services she needs to breastfeed her baby. To date, this group has raised over $30,000. This is important because insurance companies have not recognized the value of breastfeeding support and most mothers are faced with paying for services out of pocket.
Several celebration/fund raising events are planned for 2011.
We celebrated our 10 years with a staff party - current and former staff and a reunion of the founders of MilkWorks!
Ongoing
It’s Milk and Cookies Time! Mothers are hosting small, informal gatherings around the city – a perfect time to celebrate breastfeeding and MilkWorks. Host a party for your friends!
Stay tuned! More celebrations coming!
